An SEO audit is an essential process to evaluate the performance of your website in terms of natural SEO. It allows you to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your SEO strategy, as well as opportunities for improvement. In order to ensure that your site remains competitive and visible in search engines, it is recommended to carry out a complete SEO audit at least once a year.

In this article, we will discover 13 essential checks to perform each year to ensure that your website is in good health. These checks cover technical aspects, content, links and many other crucial elements for good SEO.

Site accessibility

The accessibility of a website is crucial for SEO as it determines whether search engines can efficiently index your content. Make sure your site is easily accessible by testing its robots.txt file. This file guides search engines on the pages to crawl.

Also check for meta noindex tags that could prevent the indexing of some important pages. It is essential that the key pages of your site are indexed to improve your visibility.

Finally, use tools such as Google Search Console to identify crawl errors or other problems that could harm the accessibility of your site.

Site speed analysis

The loading speed of a website is an important ranking factor for Google. A slow site can not only frustrate users, but also negatively impact your positioning in search results.

Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to measure the loading speed of your pages. Identify elements that slow down your site, such as unoptimized images or heavy JavaScript scripts.

Improve your site speed by caching certain resources, minimizing CSS and JavaScript files, and optimizing images. A fast loading speed provides a better user experience and can improve your SEO.

Duplicate content check

Duplicate content can harm your SEO ranking by misleading search engines about the original page. This can also dilute your SEO authority between different versions of the same page.

To detect duplicate content, use tools like Copyscape. Also check canonical tags on your site to ensure they correctly point to the main version of the pages.

Working on duplicate content often involves rewriting certain sections or applying appropriate tags to guide search engines. This ensures that your original content is recognized as such by the search engines.

Keyword evaluation

Keywords play a crucial role in your SEO strategy, determining how and where your site appears in search results. Regularly reassess your keywords to ensure they are still relevant for your target audience.

Use tools like Google Keyword Planner to analyze search trends and adjust your keyword strategy accordingly. Look for new long-tail keyword opportunities that may have less competition but higher targeted traffic.

Remember to naturally integrate these keywords into your content, avoiding keyword stuffing that could lead to penalties from search engines.

Backlink analysis

Backlinks, high-quality incoming links from other sites, are essential for building your website's authority. Check the health of your link profile every year to ensure it does not contain toxic links.

Use backlink analysis tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush to assess the quality and quantity of backlinks pointing to your site. Identify spammy or unreliable links that could harm your online reputation.

Implementing a strategy for removing toxic links and creating quality links will improve your SEO authority, strengthen your web reputation, and increase your visibility in search results.

Mobile compatibility review

In a world where the majority of online searches are made on mobile, it is imperative that your site is fully compatible with mobile devices. A site not optimized for mobile can lose a large portion of its potential traffic.

Test your site with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool to check how it displays on mobile devices. Look for issues related to navigation, readability, and loading speed on mobile.

Optimizing your site for mobile includes using a responsive design, compressing images, and reducing loading times. This can significantly improve user experience and ranking in mobile search results.

By performing these annual SEO audits, you can identify potential issues and take proactive steps to optimize your website. Each aspect reviewed contributes to strengthening your online presence and maintaining a good ranking in search engines.

A healthy website will attract more visitors, offer a better user experience, and lead to a continuous improvement of your online performance. Do not neglect these annual checks or your SEO efforts may suffer. Take the time to do these regular checks and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly.
